Strong Fall Competition Sets Up Winter Success

A handful of Simley wrestlers put in a strong fall, working to improve themselves and compete at high levels across the nation.  To start, four spartan wrestlers completed at the Journeyman Challenge in New York, which is comprised of the top talent in the US.  Since the competition is so well attended, only some of the wrestlers that apply are able to compete.  The others must compete through a "win and you're in" tournament the day before the Journeyman called Overflo.  Many of these wrestlers are state champions and placewinners.  Gavin Nelson and Chase Deblaere competed at Overflo and compiled some significant wins before ending their tournament.  Ryan Sokol and Cael Berg placed 5th and 6th at the Journeyman the next day, beating high level wrestlers from multiple states.

Next up was the Intermat JJ Classic, where Gavin Nelson and Chase Deblaere competed.  They both beat returning state entrants and placewinners en route to a 3rd and 1st place finish respectively.  A week later, Chase and Gavin traveled down to Iowa for Preseason nationals.  There, Chase went 4-2 in the HS division at 120, and Gavin placed 1st with a total record of 4-0, outscoring opponents 34-2.  At the same time Cael Berg and Ryan Sokol competed at Super 32, a showcase of the best talent in the nation.  These Sophomores finished with records of 1-2 and 4-2 battling with some of the best in the U.S.

This fall has proven to be a strong time for competition for the Spartans, and they are putting themselves into a position to compete for another state team title, and multiple state champions and placewinners.

Youth wrestling is just around the corner, and the high school season starts soon after that.  Go Spartans!
